FARM NEWS WHAT'S NEW? |
By putting care, knowledge, and affection into goat management, the keeper comes to perceive and enter into the oldest yet most vital experience of humanity, the nurturing cycle, and to reap its benefits and to contribute to its process. In actuality, the goat economy can be microcosmic; in implication, it is universal. -Billie Luisi

Granny knows best....a more natural approach to raising goats.

We look to the future of goat keeping and use modern tools such as type evaluation and production parameters to help lead us to better genetic choices. We cannot help but be drawn to time tested wisdom from the past when it comes to a more natural way of raising goats. Goats are creatures of the mountains. Given the opportunity they will forage and treat themselves to mother nature's cures especially if they have been taught by other herd members what should and should not be eaten. Most goats are intensively raised which in itself is unnatural. Lack of land, cold winters and the convenience of the farmer have a lot to do with how we keep our goats. No system is perfect but we do the best we can with what we have.
When our buck kids are weaned they are lucky enough to go to Granny's farm for summer vacation. We noticed that the goats in Granny's care always looked fabulous! What was she doing differently that made these animals thrive? Turns out that these goats were getting Dandelions to cleanse their livers. Then closer to fall they were being offered Goldenrod daily which acted as a conditioner. The moral of this story is that if your goats are confined and do not have access to forage, you, the goat keeper must forage for them! This year we are expanding our garden to include plants from which the goats will benefit.
We have used sage tea to help dry up does. Red raspberry leaf as a daily tonic for does in late gestation. We have seen success with clove tea as an appetite stimulant. No more glycol -P for our goats.
Apple cider vinegar has many documented benefits. Even if you don't believe in anecdotal evidence, you can't deny that most goats just love it in their drinking water. We have found this to be an excellent way to make sure that the goats drink enough water in the winter. In sub zero temperatures we offer the goats warm water at night as much as they will drink.
